…this is by all rights a drug addiction.

It’s only a problem if it interferes with her day to day life- . . . (Flashback – Shiden doesn’t take her out to eat anymore- direct negative consequence caused by the addiction) – Yeah, Ok, it’s a problem.

This sort of thing is a legit type of high, a overload of endorphins. Similar types are runners highs or other ways of tricking the body into basically drugging itself. Another good example is those who like being choked during sex, forcing adrenaline in a already exerted and euphoric state.
But most direct is spice chasers, people who us exceedingly spicy food to induce a euphoric state as the body doesn’t understand what is happening.
Now she is a robot so the exact chemistry would differ, but the efect seems to be the same, a type of self drugging.

Wait the girls can modify themselves whenever they want?

To various extents. Both with “software” adjustments and hardware extensions. Michelle replaced her original eyes with mana sensing ones. Nami created magnetic clip-on functional cat ears and was working on a tail. There’s also “subconscious” nanobot adjustment going on.

Really the only element that can’t be modified safely is the Phylactery (soul/mind) core. Which can be swapped into another body in an emergency, such as being bisected by a rampaging out-of-her-mind Lilith.

Boosting the gain on “taste” to the point of foodgasm is perhaps the most extreme, and unhealthy, modification on-panel so far. Messing with pleasure feedback systems is how humans get into trouble with addiction. Even non-pharmacological forms like gambling and gacha/loot-box games, which are designed to trigger over production of dopamine in humans.

I can see Nami checking to make sure Toyoko turned her food taste settings down for the reception after the wedding. Don’t want something like what just happened here happening there!
