Old fax machines transmitted 2 tones over the line. One meaning no-ink, one meaning ink. With the right timing this allowed an audio signal to be interpreted as an image! So once she sends the message she can tell her the “paper size” and the speed and she can reproduce the image! Pretty cool isn’t it?
Though I guess they really should have just gotten a satellite phone.
